It’s kind of like in the 1800s they believed that human beings could never generate enough pollutants to actually affect the Earth. There are intelligent opinions statements saying that the Earth was simply too large for anything a mere handful of 100 million humans could do to leave any lasting impact on.

Of course, they had no idea that we would swell to 8 billion humans or that the industrial revolution would take off quite so well as it did, but even today there are many people who believe that nothing that they individually do can leave any type of lasting ecological impact, positive or negative.

And because of that you have bum fuck HVAC technicians venting refrigerants into the atmosphere willy-nilly and assholes driving down the street throwing lit cigarette butts out in the middle of a drought and people just dumping their trash wherever they find an opportunity to dump it.

I said all of that to say that it’s probably likely that even minor usage of drugs cause effects that are at best difficult to quantify. I don’t think getting high one time is going to be the differentiation between a homeless bum and a Nobel Peace prize winner, but it might be the difference between someone who works a career and earns at their best $250,000 a year and someone who works a career and earns at their best $80,000 a year.

I could have sworn nicotine was technically a stimulant because it has vasoconstrictive properties.

And I don’t know anyone who has ever put off going to sleep in order to take more depressants.

If your old phone has a removable battery, you can sometimes replace them with an appropriate capacitor.

I work in it and one of our employees brought a laptop to us that had been completely and thoroughly dismantled with a screwdriver.

As an alternative to what everyone else is saying, a multi terabyte external drive has become very inexpensive lately.

If you look around I’m sure that you can find a good deal to vastly expand your storage without spending a lot of money.

I’ve used my 3090 with Nvidia super resolution just watching old shit I downloaded back in the LimeWire days that for some reason I was still holding on to and the result is not perfect but it is pretty decent.

For instance I had a copy of chobits that was probably in hell 240i resolution or something, and with Nvidia super resolution it looks only vaguely indistinguishable from the 720p stuff you can stream online.

Of course, when you use Nvidia super resolution with the 720p stuff it looks stellar, so higher resolution by default wins over AI up resolution but it works in a pinch

What do you think the possibility is that this fear of a Chinese back door in every bit of technology is just fear mongering designed to control what people purchase?

I mean, we have at our disposal the ability to say you can’t import technology from China anymore and yet America does not do that, but then American tech companies say OMG back door China bad and people eat that shit up.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying there isn’t a back door. We have found the ones in the $14 Android boxes, but I am saying that it’s not in every single piece of tech that gets shipped to America from China

The main issue that I’ve run into is that foxit has a pretty decent signing system for signing PDFs which comes in handy from time to time and foxit and adobe both have batch editing for PDFs which is really handy for taking a bunch of random documents and sizing them to be all the same view size and rotating pages and the like to make everything nice and uniform for sharing with others.

I love Linux and I use it quite a bit but I’ve not really found a Linux software that is good at editing PDFs.

I think Alexander got what was coming to him. He cut through a complicated problem and ruined one of the mysteries of the world in the process.

Then he took over much of the world then he mysteriously fell ill and died after 12 days of suffering.

My fan theory is that he could have unraveled the gordian knot in 12 days and would have become a true emperor of the world if he had had the patience to give it an honest try.

When I was a kid I was obsessed with the story of the gordian knot and Alexander’s wacky solution to it. I decided for some strange reason to train myself to untangle knots and to this day I’m still pretty good at it.

Seeing this reminded me of finding the two Newton’s cradles that I own that had survived my most recent move that were all very tangled and spending a good 5 minutes untangling them and cursing this weird drive I have to untangle knots.

The reason why people go for the 20% Mark is because once you clear 20% then you don’t have PMI, or private mortgage insurance. That typically runs three quarters of a percent of the purchase price of the house until you have 22% of the house paid off, and you have to pay that on top of your mortgage, the interest, and the taxes and insurance.

For every $100,000 you finance that means that if you pay less than 20% down you will have to pay an extra $750 a year just as a “couldn’t afford 20% down” fee.

And typically to get the first quarter of your mortgage paid off takes 10 years, so for many people that will be $7,500 per $100,000 they borrow to buy a house as the poverty cherry fee on top of everything else.

There are also closing costs and other fees. I bought a house in 2020 using the native American home loan program.

I had to put down two and a quarter percent as a minimum and on a $500,000 house that should have been $11,250, but the total to close was actually a touch over 20 grand.

It took me several years to save up that money and it disappeared in a flash.
