Welcome to late-stage capitalism, where companies sell what you do not want to buy. e.g., no wired connection has ever once had this problem, but they had to sell more thingies, so now everything is bluetooth, whether it should be or not, plus it seems like nobody ever bothered to finish implementing bluetooth - e.g., this exact issue you are having, which surely could be fixed except… why bother, when you (& your neighbors) have already bought all the thingies?

Sadly, that part comes later as well:-(.

The only bright side is that after the adjustment period, Earth is going to be just fine - no lie! (Humans living on it though… that’s a bit of a different story now…😞)

If you’re an OG iPhone or Mac user, then you might remember paid software updates. Over a decade ago, long before iOS 16 and macOS Ventura, major Apple OS updates used to cost users around $10 for iOS and $20 for macOS. By iOS 4, though, Apple switched to free software updates, allowing users to update their devices for as long as they’re supported without having to pay a fee.

Yeah, but nowadays it’s all “free” - as in you only pay for the hardware to enter their walled garden (but then no matter how much you pay, you can never really leave! at least not via normal, legal means, if you want to ever come back - Welcome to the Hotel California 🎶…!:-P).

Although ironically, the OS software itself is free to end users, as are future upgrades.

Google also sells hardware, e.g. in its Pixel line, and there too the OS software is “free”, as are future upgrades, up to a point.

Both sell listings in their respective stores.

These concepts are getting murkier over time.

Right, the ratchet effect, where once we extinct ourselves we don’t so much come back from that:-).

Unless we exist in multiple realities, whether physical like if humanity was seeded amongst the stars, or like metaverse style, or maybe we are only a simulation to begin with, then it’s only our branch that would end, and even that ignores plot constraints.

Then again, it doesn’t really matter, if we have no control over it anyway. What matters, it seems like to me anyway, is if we knew better and just flat did not care: if we are only responsible for our own parts, then conversely we are responsible for that much at least.

Yup, it’s so weird even that we might also have the technology to save ourselves - like maybe AI should be ruling us instead of humans (bc that way whoever made the AI can be the secret king - surely that’s not new either:-P).

But history does tend to run in cycles, for whatever that’s worth. One day the sun won’t shine down on us anymore, but so far it always has, even if that doesn’t mean that it always will.

In any case, definitely some hard times coming up ahead, that much seems certain at least. Though extinction, while possible, is not a foregone conclusion. I mean, if even Kurzgesagt can find hope, it must be warranted.:-) video 1, video 2 focusing mostly on climate change

It will continue for precisely as long as it continues to work… (plus probably a bit longer to account for lag time).

Oh that’s interesting. Kbin lacks a formalized API (or at least it did - possibly this next update was going to address that and yet Ernst did say something about shifting priorities so maybe that’s bumped now) so I got the impression that Lemmy was further along, but yeah they both have a ways to go to catch up to the decade or so of work put into Reddit. Although the latter manages to find new & innovative ways to break itself constantly anyways so maybe both Kbin and Lemmy will meet it somewhere in the middle sooner than we might think? :-P (and yet slower than most people would like I’m sure:-D)

When I signed up it was email + captcha. I cannot find even an option for voluntary 2FA.

I don’t know the details but people who wanted to work on Kbin and looked into it say that it is a much less developed platform overall (i.e. not fully a beta and more like still in alpha, e.g. lacking a true API), but it does offer benefits socially (to further disconnect from the originators of the Lemmy software) and to have another codebase that offers federation.

I get none at all -> I wonder if someone signed you up to receive all of that. Make sure to “thank” them:-P.

It is literally not - they sell licenses to large companies, and individual users are only an afterthought.

It’s usually as easy as searching for 1…2…3… :-)
