Yes, not everything needs to work. But everyone needs the things they want to work, if that makes sense. In other words: everyone has different requirements.

I require SteamVR to run acceptably in order to play VR games on my main computer. I have yet to find a distro that satisfies this requirement, so I must use Windows since it is the only thing that works for that use case.
Conversely, I do not require VR support on my laptop. Everything I want to do with my laptop can be done to an acceptable level with Linux, so I run Linux on my laptop. Simple.

Some software unfortunately requires it. Yes, Wine/Proton exists, but it doesn’t fix everything.

Changing the UI elements isn’t the reason why Android exists. The purpose of a phone’s OS is to act like a phone. Both Android and iOS do this perfectly well. If they didn’t, nobody would use them. Everything else they can do is just a nice bonus.

Don’t get me wrong, I much prefer Android because of those features (plus I hate walled gardens), but I think your usage of the word “purpose” might be a bit of a stretch here.

They’re not really that different. They both have apps which you open and use to do different things. In a car that would likely be to communicate with people, listen to music, or to navigate.

Haven’t ads always been recommendations in some roundabout way? Regular ads are technically just a company recommending their own product/service to you (whether you need it or not).

Deletion on many online services is “soft”. Which is, exactly as you say, just hiding it and preventing it from contributing to various counts/statistics.

I imagine it’s named like that because “hide” implies “hide from myself only” (like hiding a dialog box), whereas delete implies something more permanent.
Also, when a user wants to get rid of something the first word they’ll look for tends to be “delete”, so why make it harder for them to find that button by naming it something unconventional like “hide from all”? Even if it’s technically more accurate, users just don’t care.

I also imagine some services keep some things for legal reasons, even after “deletion”.

If that’s a problem for you, do you also fall for the fake virus alert scams? It’s very easy to tell them apart. Plus, muscle memory doesn’t apply here since you can just swing your mouse to the top left of the screen and click. No vision is even needed. That’s what muscle memory is.

Sync (and Boost) have Lemmy-compatible versions in development right now. Sync for Lemmy might even be out already, I haven’t checked yet.
