Joke aside, for an open question I’d prefer posting on Reddit/Lemmy/forums to have an open answer.

From my personal experience, AWS is extremely powerful (especially on security and networking). If you cross the learning curve, and know automation or Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform) then it’s fast and easy to build almost any architecture.
But yes, it’s overkill for a simple website or a simple setup (if one is not familiar with AWS).
Markdown is good. I use it when working in the company since the format is ubiquitous. I do writing my blog posts with Markdown (Hugo for the curious).
But personally, or working with a bit more niche team, for writing personal documentation I prefer Asciidoc [0]. It has better syntax and have some nice functionalities like Table of Contents.
For personal notes, nothing can surpass Org Mode [1].
Well, bash scripts are infamous for being arcane so commenting abundantly is better than nothing.
Actually this is a good practice. If you don’t know where the program is or if the source is not open, you shouldn’t install blindly.
“Code is the documentation” is the paradise we all want to be someday. But some people use that as an excuse to not write the documentation explaining why this piece of code exists in the first place. I find it extremely annoying when there is not a single architecture diagram is available and someone tell me to figure it out by reading his/her spaghetti code.
Click something and you’re there (e.g. viewing logs of a container). You don’t have to remember
dockercommands to do simple and quick operations.
Functional programming is so much fun. Sadly people usually give it complicated concepts to a point that it scares beginners away.
I understand that by giving something a name, we have control and can communicate effectively with others about it (like design patterns). But still…
Time to check out Podman.
Try limiting it down to 2GB (there is an option in the Docker Desktop app). Before I discovered this option, the VM was normally eating 3-4GB of my memory.
Do you have any troubles running it as your daily OS? Do you use it as your hobby or also for your work?
I know Nix and use it as my package manager, but I’m not sure about the experience with NixOS. So I’m still reluctant to make the switch.

1·1 year agoI got some tastes of FP while writing Ruby. And then I got times to tinker with Emacs Lisp. Fascinated by the idea of FP, I tried Clojure after that (without even knowing Java). And then I wanted to discover more Lisp-family languages: Common Lisp, Scheme, Racket, etc. You name it. This summer I was to learn Haskell, but got distracted by some university homeworks with Java Stream API…
