I’ve been pushing positivity since the beginning before the first 1.5k joined this server. https://lemmy.world/post/36032

I would do it, and have the time, but I don’t think you guys meet my requirements to make it manageable. I don’t use proprietary software, and use a whitelist firewall with addresses I know and trust, like this server. While I can spin up a secondary network or even a Windows machine, I do not care to do so at all, and certainly not regularly. However, I’m basically at a computer all the time anyways.

What’s up with the haters? Me, or something I said?

  • Hey Ruud. Overall the post comes across as if it has odd intentions. It does not clearly state the purpose of the post but it explains a bunch of what it is not. In corporate America and American politics we are constantly getting these kinds of messages. It almost always means everything that is addressed in the message is about to happen. The person that wrote the information is trying to tell the reader how to think instead of providing information and allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions.

You have mentioned your other servers in the fediverse in the past, and it was always in this type of informative, “draw your own conclusions” type of post. I appreciate that, and can respect it.

The proper way to introduce sublinks would be in a similar vain, to simply state that it exists and what its merits are versus Lemmy. If change may be coming to Lemmy.world, simply explain the reasoning behind those decisions. It is great if you can involve the community, but the involvement should be following the principals and alignment of the community to engage with them. Microsoft as a service for providing my personal details is not aligned with my values. Perhaps if I lived in the EU I would feel differently, but in the USA I have little choice but to avoid these companies entirely.

A survey is often a tool used to gauge how to administer a change that will be unpopular, and this usually means the change in direction addressed in the survey has already been decided.

My concern could be completely misplaced. I have not punched a hole in my firewall for Microsoft or agreed to their terms of service to see the content of the survey. The only information I have is what is posted here.

My concern has nothing to do with the obvious joke. I am concerned that this post does not describe its purpose clearly, it implies major changes are coming, and it promotes feedback in a way that does not align with my principals as a very active user here. On a separate note, the comment about sociology is curious for its unsolicited randomness. Do you run any scientific experiments in the background or allow other to do so?

I default to a skeptical line of questioning , but I am not trying to be negative or accusatory. It is mostly a desire to learn and understand what is happening under the surface.

  • After mulling this post over for awhile:

    • .world has many instances in the fediverse and existed long before Lemmy.world. Ruud has never, to my knowledge, posed anything like this post about another potential fedi service. The other fediverse services have coexisted without need to position them against each other. This difference in approach implies intentions, if not outright actions with the illusion of user input.
    • The prevalence of Linux users on this platform is common knowledge. So much so, it is a common complaint from users that feel excluded or uninterested in Linux. The use of Linux implies a distrust for Microsoft, and for the most part megacorporations. While the survey creator (sublinks) may receive anonymous data, Microsoft is absolutely correlating information that comes across their server and selling that data. In my opinion, this should have been an obvious thing most of the Linux community will not participate in, (myself included as one of the most active users and a mod). And it reflects poorly on the FOSS nature of sublinks. A FOSS survey system is needed badly for effective engagement.
    • As many of us in the social sciences background know... Please explain the intention of this statement. I don’t mean to be cynical, but to me, this implies I have been part of some science experiment of unknown intentions and implications; at the extreme end of possible meanings. I thought we were a FOSS community, many with a self hosting interest. A social sciences interest and background has entirely different motivations and raises concern for me.

I wouldn’t trust any oven based methodology because most have ancient barely functional electronics. Like the temperature control circuit could be orders of magnitude better for a total BOM cost of ~$1-$2, but they ship with absolute garbage instead. The overshoot, undershoot, and relative average are all wildly random. Every model and likely every unit are vastly different. Every unit I have taken apart is the same turd junk like electronics in a different dress.

That doesn’t help now. Sorry for the bad day.

IIRC it is done so that you can choose to match the locks upon purchase, buy replacements, stores are motivated to carry lock cylinders, and you can expand based on what you already own. (Don’t shoot the messenger :)

It probably also has to do with how contract manufacturing works.

It’s mostly inventory and distribution issues. The stuff is hard to carry and maintain stock because of the number of SKU’s one has to keep on hand just to cover like 70% of vehicles.

When I was the Buyer for a bike shop chain, I tied as much revenue to Thule as I did with most bike brands, but it hurt in terms of inventory turn times and cash flow. I had most stuff in stock all the time, but that money was not turning margin as well as it would have in accessories or even bikes with their poor margin.

It always made me nervous too. Bikes I can clear out at cost. Clothing and accessories I can swap meet. There is no demand market to liquidate Thule stuff. Like I knew eBay intimately. I can sell ultra high end stuff on there as real auctions with a $0.99 starting price, 10 days, and no reserve. I will always get higher than cost with my techniques (at the time). That would not be the case if I tried the same thing with Thule. A great deal in an enormous market is irrelevant when the product only works for 5% of said market.

It is just a tough product to carry at the retail/distribution level in a way that is profitable… Just to explain in WAY too much detail. The only way to fix it would be the standardization of vehicles.

  • Pixel has a Trusted Protection Module like computers with secure boot. No phone hardware in existence is documented at the hardware level. This is how planned obsolescence is created and why you have to buy a new phone every few years.

With a TPM chip it becomes possible to run signed and secured code on top of untrusted hardware and underlying software. Without this, your security is very limited in practice. Graphene OS is verifiably secure and only runs what you put on it.

The entire Android system is designed for people to use when they have no clue how to secure a device themselves and when they are far too incompetent to learn. The way this is done is to delegate a lot of permissions to app developers. This gives a lot of freedom to the apps you run. They can exploit the hell out of you within their little sandbox of vague permissions. Graphene does everything possible to limit what is happening in the background and the exploitations. It is default privacy.

I do not purchase phones as hardware any more. I don’t care what is sold by any of the exploitation clowns. I shop for my ROM and buy a device that is well supported by that project. I’ve owned several Graphene OS devices and am happy with them. I had a Lineage device I liked too awhile back.

  • That wouldn’t do a whole lot in practice for things like phones. Having root access is not the actual hurtle. The hardware itself is usually undocumented and the kernel is not mainline merged so the community can’t actually support the device in a meaningful way.

The only kernel that supports the device is the ancient orphaned forked kernel that ships from the manufacturer. This is what Android really is and why you’ll often hear people say it is not real Linux. In truth it is its own thing with a stripped down Linux kernel underpinning it. Google puts together a stripped down Linux kernel for devices that is specifically setup for hardware manufacturers to add the hardware support binaries at the last possible minute. You would need hardware documentation for the chipset and the source code for these binaries in order for the community to support the hardware in the mainline kernel.

These hardware manufactures are too embarrassed to share their terrible code, and too worried about getting caught for all of the IP they have stolen to build their hardware. Their criminality comes with the added benefit of theft of end consumer ownership through planned deprecation.

I didn’t word my reply so direct or strongly, but it is the glass half empty truth.
