I understand that, but surely the Admin who took the action isn’t in a different timezone form themselves? What was stopping them immediately posting just before or just after taking the action?

Whilst I completely understand why you, as private individuals with limited income and not a huge org that has high priced legal teams on call, have made this decision (I think people forget that it costs money just to defend yourself in court, irrespective of how accurate or legal the charges might be), this is about the 3rd or 4th time that the Admin team have communicated and taken action very, very poorly.

It’s really not a difficult thing to do. A post such as this either before or immediately after taking such important actions. I realise you’re all busy people with real life stuff to do too but surely you tell new Admin’s when they’re onboarded that momentous decisions that affect a lot of people must be communicated to the members immediately?

I realise that as individuals without the huge resources of a business your options are limited. I also have a lot of sympathy with the admins and mods being exposed to that shit. I don’t know what the answer is but I don’t think blanket silencing all users who care about their privacy is a solution.

I think that’s good but protecting religion is questionable to me. I’m not saying its OK to attack people based on their religion but religion isn’t a property of a person in the way their ethnicity or sexuality is, it’s merely an opinion someone holds. If your wording is adopted, it’d be nice to see the difference between attacking who someone is and an opinion someone holds made clear.

It’s not clear what you’re saying? Are you saying transphobes are misogynists?

It does feel like DNS resolvers are the next battleground. I can’t remember the provider (NextDNS maybe?) but a DNS resolver was threatened by several very large media companies that they would sue if the provider didn’t block resolution to pirate sites. The provider caved IIRC.

CloudFlare might have deep enough pockets to take on Sony/Disney or even EU law but the smaller providers certainly don’t.

I believe it transpired awhile ago that the servers are physically located in Finland but they do use CloudFlare. As such, I would assume (as oppose to know) that the legality rests on Finnish law. CloudFlare’s responsibilities are often tested but there does seem to be a large grey area. This is an interesting read concerning German law on DNS resolvers in general and CloudFlare in particular.

That statement is a bit like someone saying ‘all lives matter’ in response to people saying ‘black lives matter’ after another black person is gunned down.

There are very obviously groups of people who are targeted for violence, threats, harassment and abuse based solely on who they are. Ginger, blonde and black haired people don’t experience this.

By making it explicit in a ToS or set of rules that attacking these groups of people is against the rules, the Admins could’ve made those users feel just a little bit safer and welcome on their server. Removing those explicit rules makes them, by contrast, feel unsafer and less welcome. That’s one of things .world admin team have achieved with this change.

I want a no-defederation instance because I have a principled objection to others telling me what I can or cannot view.

Which you want someone else to be legally responsible for providing you with.

Defederation is never going to go away because there are whole instances out there dedicated to hosting illegal material and because, lets not forget, Admin’s want the Lemmyverse to succeed and a way for it to not succeed is to federate with instances that do this and also have userbases made up of racists, homophobes, transphobes etc. Literally no one wants to be constantly firefighting their own individual user block lists to keep blocking hundreds of awful people. What they want is to spend time on their communities. That’s why instances have codes of conduct stating what they won’t allow. It allows quick, painless instant separation from arseholes without putting the onus on all their users to individually block users from whole instances.

But, as Admin and Mod level tools (and to a lesser extent user tools) get developed, defederation will happen less and less.

LASIM can help you move all your account details. Lemmy is nowhere hear as mature a product as Mastodon so it’s no surprise a lot of what Mastodon has, Lemmy doesn’t - yet.

I’m really not sure you’re ever going to be able to have what you seem to want because it doesn’t exist. There’s a limited set of tools available and if an instance Admin isn’t being vigilant, there’ll always be fuckwits ready to do shitty things. If the only way that other Admins can tackle that is defederation then that’s what’ll happen. It’s not going to affect user retention because I think the majority of people are quite prepared to accept that unmoderated instances are a liability of a much greater scale than defederation.

It really won’t. Mastodon has whole block lists and has done for years and guess what - user retention is no problem at all.

From what you’ve commented here, you’re annoyed that you keep picking instances to join that allow shitty things to happen and then don’t. The issue there is not defederation, it’s that:

1. Moderation is lacking
2. Your insistence on wanting to join an instance that’s a free-for-all

In the real world, instance Admin’s are legally responsible for what’s on their servers. If you want to defed from absolutely no one then you need to rent a VPS and spin up a Lemmy instance of your own. That way, the legal risk is all your own.

I expect the Admin’s priority was to worry about potentially inadvertently hosting CSAM rather than user retention.

A user on there posted CSAM. Given that images federate too and that moderation over there seems to be lacking, do you not think it’s unrealistic not to expect defederation?

I don’t think either a corporate entity or another instance/software type is behind this. The motivation for these people is the same as those who used to post a certain image with the word ‘goat’ as part of the title all over usenet binary groups and web forums. They simply find it funny that so many people are appalled and they feel a sense of power that they’ve affected so large a community. There’s nothing more complicated than that to it.

Is it possible to (at least temporarily):

1. Turn off instance image hosting (disable pictrs)
2. Disallow image and video posts across all communities
3. As in Firefish, turn off caching of remote images from other instances.

whilst longer term solutions are sought? This would at least ensure poor mods aren’t exposed to this shit and an instance could be more positive they’re not inadvertently hosting CSAM.
